UK dispensing optician wins award at Silmo

Andrew Keirl wins Silmo IOA International Optician of the Year Award 2019

British dispensing optician Andrew Keirl has won the Silmo International Opticians Association (IOA) International Optician of the Year Award 2019.

Keirl has worked in optics since 1979, starting as a student dispensing optician with Dollond & Aitchinson and has lectured to students taking exams in Singapore, Malaysia and Kenya. He joined Anglia Ruskin University to develop courses in ophthalmic dispensing and optical management, before starting a part time optometry degree alongside his full time teaching and administrative role, where he received awards for the highest mark in investigative techniques and the highest overall mark obtained for a dispensing optician.

Keirl now runs his own independent practice, offering clinics for glaucoma patients, post-operative clinics for patients who’ve had cataract surgery and Minor Eye Conditions Services.

As well as winning the award on September 28 at Silmo Paris, Keirl has also received life membership for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, which is the highest honour awarded by the association.

IOA president and chair of the selection committee Fiona Anderson said: ‘Andrew is a worthy recipient of this award. The wider world of optics has benefited from his extensive contribution to our sector. Through his training, educational and academic writing he has enhanced our knowledge, skill and art in the world of ophthalmic dispensing. We owe Andrew a great debt of gratitude.’
