UK expands sight testing for special schools

The Department of Health and Social care has announced that NHS England will make sight tests available to all special schools from 2024/25.  

This followed a 2021 pilot programme that introduced a potential service model in special residential schools as part of the NHS Long Term Plan.

A reviewal has been undertaken to develop the expanded sight testing scheme, with engagement from schools over the summer. NHS England will publish a revised service specification and roll-out plans after. 

ABDO clinical lead Max Halford said: ‘This is a good news story for all of the children who’s access to eyecare cannot be delivered in traditional settings and we congratulate SeeAbility and sector colleagues who have worked tirelessly to keep the eyecare of children at special schools on the governments agenda and we look forward to working with them to ensure the long-term success of this service.’
