Just weeks after a new optometry course at the University of Hertfordshire was approved by the General Optical Council, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has confirmed exclusively to Optician that it considering establishing a new optometry programme

University of Central Lancashire planning optometry courseJust weeks after a new optometry course at the University of Hertfordshire was approved by the General Optical Council, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has confirmed exclusively to Optician that it considering establishing a new optometry programme.

A UCLan spokesperson said: ‘We are at the preliminary stages of exploring the possibility of running an optometry programme. We believe there is a demand for the course but at this early point we are unable to predict a formal course validation submission date to the GOC.’

Earlier this year, news of the University of Hertfordshire’s plans received widespread condemnation from within the optometric profession. A Change.org e-petition which claimed it was ‘protecting the future of optometry’ said there was no need for another course and attracted 2,697 signatures.
