Researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) have secured £220,000 in funding to develop the use of video games to help treat children with amblyopia.
The funding has been granted by the Scottish government’s Chief Scientist Office, and GCU’s Professor Anita Simmers will launch an exploratory randomised control trial in the treatment of amblyopia using video games.
The trial, called Perceptual Learning in Enhanced Amblyopia Treatment, will recruit children from the orthoptic clinic of Gartnaval General Hospital in Glasgow, whose visual acuity improvement has reached a plateau using an eye patch. Participants were to be split into monocular, binocular and dichoptic viewing groups.
A custom-made video game was also being developed in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley, which will split the screen to encourage the use of both eyes.
