ABDO, FODO and the AOP have moved to clarify their position on the role of the LOC support unit and the LOC central fund and levies.
This move follows a resolution at the 2007 National Optometric conference, (Optician, November 2 2007) for the LOC central fund to find a more equitable method of funding than from the voluntary levy.
The resolution prompted a letter to all LOCs and regional optical committees (ROCs) inviting their views about the future of the fund and ways of contributing. In light of the response generated by this letter, the optical bodies have again written to LOCs/ROCs seeking to clarify a number of issues raised by members. The latest letter states that 'the strategy for the LOC support unit is set by its board which consists of representatives of LOCs/ ROCs, ABDO, AOP and FODO with observers from the College of Optometrists and LOC Central Fund'. They also clarify that in line with legal advice, voluntary donations to the central fund 'should be made through a voluntary levy'.
