The Welsh National Assembly health committee has told officials in the profession that it is proposing an eye examination, outside General Ophthalmic Services. 'The committee has concluded that early diagnosis of eye disease would be best approved by introducing a new eye examination, specifically structured to identify eye disease,' it has stated. 'The intention is to provide for a new examination, outside GOS arrangements, but free and available on demand to those from ethnic minorities, hearing impaired, the uniocular and those at risk from retinitis pigmentosa.' However, Bob Hughes, general secretary of the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians, said he had concerns about the idea. 'I think the committee may not have understood the way these matters are financed,' he said. 'There will be enormous concern among optometrists that if they carry a 'package' of tests within this examination which, for example, doesn't include refraction on someone who hasn't had a sight test for some time, and something is missed, they will be up on a disciplinary charge.' This needs to be clarified. Mr Hughes confirmed that negotiations, which include FODO and the Association of Optometrists, begin today. - Optical bodies move in together - page 7.
