Pupils in Barry, Wales, received a visit from the director of the local Specsavers to learn about the importance of eye health and regular sight tests.
Dispensing optician Jamie Pullen showed children different pictures of an eye, highlighted the different areas of it and how it functions. This was to show why regular sight tests are important for spotting changes that could indicate health concerns.
He presented the school with a Specsavers iSpy educational pack and was joined during the visit by Sue Dyer, who lost her sight due to age-related macular degeneration and her guide dog Sid.
Pullen said: ‘The children at Oak Field Primary School asked a lot of questions and took a keen interest in eye health. Keeping a check on your eye health is important for a number of reasons. Not only do regular sight tests ensure your vision is as good as it can be, but changes to your eyes can also be an early sign of wider health conditions, such as strokes and – on occasion - life-threatening brain tumours.’
He added: ‘I hope our visit has encouraged the children to learn more about eye health and let their families know the benefits of taking care of their eyes.’
