Patient left with lesion on cornea after glitter from Christmas card fell into her eye

A woman was left with a lesion on her cornea after glitter from a Christmas card fell into her eye, a report in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) has said.

The 49-year-old patient was treated at Swansea’s Singleton Hospital after almost losing vision in one of her eyes which had become swollen and red.

In the BMJ case study, doctors originally mistook the lesion as the result of a herpes infection. However, upon inspecting the lesion under a microscope, doctors discovered a shiny surface.

After hearing the news, the woman recalled getting glitter from a Christmas card stuck in her eye.
