Back to the US, where the Federal Trade Commision has fined the internet retailer Gothic Lenses $50,000 to put a stop to its alleged illegal practice of selling cosmetic contact lenses (theatrical and Halloween-themed) to consumers without prescriptions. This is only the FTC's sixth enforcement action since it issued a Contact Lens Rule in 2004 whereby sellers must verify that a consumer has a valid Rx for contact lenses, including cosmetic lenses. The GOC had suspended such prosecutions but now it's clearly time to get scary with internet retailers supplying UK consumers without valid contact lens prescriptions.
