A week of news - obscured legacy

Poor vision screening in schools is at risk of stunting Olympic 'legacy' before it has even started.

These were the considered thoughts of Sight Care chief executive Paul Surridge in this week's Optician.

He pointed out that a fifth of children did not see the ball properly when playing sport, while roughly the same number couldn't even see their teammates.

The Sight Care study is proof that despite all the hyperbole of London 2012 nearly two years ago, a large number of potential sports stars are slipping the net.

Indeed, while 60 per cent of children are going without regular eye tests the Olympic legacy will struggle to come into focus.
