An objective view of the research in supplementation

Bill Harvey

A sober and objective review of the impact of supplementation has appeared on the Cochrane Library this month - I would suggest all interested in non-sensationalist science join this free-to-view resource as it regularly runs reviews based on all the peer-reviewed data relating to matters ranging from whether red wine is good for you right the way through to the effectiveness of certain medical treatments. It is in some way like a scientific 'Which?' resource. The first of the three reviews looks at the effectiveness or otherwise of omega-3 supplementation on eye health and concludes 'there is currently no evidence to support increasing levels of omega 3 LCPUFA in the diet for the explicit purpose of preventing or slowing the progression of AMD' http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23152282
