Antibacterial announcement

Rory Brogan

Fresh from Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science is the news of a development in fighting contact lens bacterial infections. To cut a longish story short, researchers have found a way of breaking down biofilms associated with contact lenses, and are reporting a biofilm reduction on CLs of some 80 per cent. The treatment, using the enzyme DNAase and negatively charged poly aspartic acid, is also reported to have reduced infection in an an animal model by 41 per cent. First author of the study, Danielle Robertson, assistant professor of ophthalmology at UT Southwestern said this could point to potentially new methods for removing bacterial bioflims from CL surfaces, thus reducing the risk of microbial keratitis. We await more developments on this one. http://tinyurl.com/6d73ssr
