The permeation of silicone hydrogel material throughout our contact lens practice has been all conquering. So much so that many practitioners adopt SiH lenses as the first choice for most, if not all, patients. Indeed, I have sat in lectures where people have argued that, by not recommending the lens with the greatest oxygen provision at the corneal surface, one might be accused of mismanagement or even negligence were there to be consequences due to hypoxia.

Interesting then to read the review this week by two well-known researchers in contact lens work showing that traditional hydrogel materials still very much have a place in our clinics.
