Around two years ago, I heard a prescient review of myopia management by Professor Ed Mallen, someone with an impressive record in myopia research. At the time, he suggested refractive error to be ‘a clumsy tool’ in monitoring and detecting small changes in myopia. Rather, mindful that there is a 0.33mm axial length (AL) increase correlation with every 1.00DS of myopia, Mallen suggested that biometry data are more useful in myopia therapy monitoring.

Current biometers are rarely found outside refractive surgical and research facilities. But the latest Optopol OCT, the REVO NX, boasts AL measurement. I caught up with the BIB team at a technology event last week and took a closer look. The measurement seemed repeatable, and I was able to assess AL on myself with and without contact lenses in, and the implied thickness of my CL was spot on.
