
It is always gratifying when I get some response to my ramblings. I have noticed, perhaps not surprisingly, that I garner most responses where I venture into the political. For example, when last year I moaned about the likely impact of Brexit upon science education (having found out about overseas delegates struggling to attend UK vision science conferences and post-graduates struggling to maintain study visas), I received quite a few emails – not all in agreement of course.
I remembered this last week when I saw our new prime minister finally recognising the potential impact of a no-deal Brexit upon UK science and acknowledging this with a somewhat desperate announcement of reassurance. Careful analysis of the data might imply electioneering rather than solid evidence on this issue at the moment.
