An announcement came from the Association of Optometrists this week, with chief executive Henrietta Alderman saying: ‘In light of the strong views we have heard from our members, I can confirm that the AOP will be opposing the introduction of degree apprenticeships for optometry.’ Meanwhile, the College of Optometrists has stated, ‘We will strongly oppose any route to qualification which diminishes professional standards, quality of education, or puts patient safety at risk.’
If you go to the website to offer feedback (which I recommend), the AOP and the College are still listed as ‘supporting organisations’. Not sure why. I have offered my feedback – it takes around 20 to 30 minutes, but well worth it in my view to avoid any of the ‘well you had your chance to have input’ comments in future – go to www.surveygizmo.eu/s3/90170485/Optometrist-Apprent... to give yours.
