We have extended the availability of our two current distance learning interactive CET exercises

As we approach the latter months of the current CET cycle, just a reminder that we have extended the availability of the two current distance learning interactive CET exercises until the end of this month. Plenty of time yet, then, for hearty discussion on cataract management and myopia intervention.

A few months ago, we ran a story about the formation of a new optometry group in Greece (penned by an ex-City student). The feature included a call for any not-too-out-of- date textbooks from you all out there. If you missed this, and have some gems you are happy to offload to help education in an area still reeling from economic crisis, then please send or drop them off to the Optician office address. We will make sure those received by the end of August will get to Greece safely.

Interesting to see the life ban from practice forced upon Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba by the GMC being overturned. I do think this has important implications on culpability where resource limitations are a factor in errors being made, and also in accepting that mistakes, however tragic, need full, fair and open investigation so that clinical practice can develop. A sensible decision.

Next, we have occasionally mentioned in some of our low vision articles the excellent OrCam gadget. This week, the latest addition to the already impressive capability of this spectacle mounted vision aid was announced. It now can read bar codes and tell the wearer details of any product focused on.

When I opined some months back about the new glucose monitors that mean diabetics need not have to continually prick their fingers any more, little did I know that Theresa May is a type 1 diabetic and, by sporting her transmitter on her arm when parading Donald Trump around, she would highlight the fact that the device is only available to those living in certain postcode areas. Mmm.
