Bill Harvey: Zooming in on lenses and their use

From now on, every lens issue of Optician will include CET relating to ophthalmic lenses and dispensing.

This will include a major review of modern, progressive addition lenses by Professor Mo Jalie. We are also introducing the concept of a lens file. Each file will focus on one specific lens design and highlight its material properties and design, for whom it might be most appropriate, and also any particular features that need to be borne in mind when dispensing. Spectacle lens knowledge is essential, yet too many of our graduate optometrists struggle with this – when asked to suggest lenses suited for some specific patient case scenarios, too many turn to a restricted list of default options on their practice system. I hope we may in part help to address this by expanding and archiving lens files that better reflect all that is out there.
