Putting protection of the public at the heart of your ethos seems to be a panacea for any public body these days, but is protection achieved by getting tough with the regulators?
News last week from the Law Commission that a clear and consistent framework was needed to enable regulators of health professionals to do their job properly is an unassailable position. The report came with the rider that the Professional Standards Authority was to get tough with regulators, checking their fitness to practise findings and their financial effectiveness. But did the report and recommendations fulfil the brief when it came to giving regulators the power to act?
