Eyecare education has long been the elephant in the optical room.
Making the public aware of the importance of eyecare is the fundamental force that will bring about all of the changes hoped for by the optical profession, and business.
It's not that eyecare education hasn't been identified as something that needs to tackled. The profession knows the elephant is there but it seems quite happy to coexist with this particular pachyderm.
If there was ever a hope that others might educate the public on optics' behalf two pieces of news this week put that idea to rest.
The Macular society reports (news) that a tiny eight per cent of MPs are fully aware of the link between smoking and macular degeneration. AMD may be the biggest cause of blindness but 600 kids a day will take up the habit. How can MPs ever vote to make optometry part of primary care if they don't understand the basic causes of vision loss?
