Chris Bennett: Make sure GOC contact lens code isn't just a chocolate soldier

The outcome could be the former simply not signing up to the scheme and the latter publishing warnings without actively checking prescriptions before dispatching product

No one would disagree with the sentiment behind the General Optical Council’s plans for a code of practice for online contact lens suppliers but can such a voluntary code ever be more than a chocolate soldier?

The code recognises the need to protect the public when buying contact lenses online. This will be achieved through encouragement, from signatories to buyers, to seek regular aftercare and eye examinations. In return the vendors would be able to display an endorsement logo to allow buyers to spot signed-up sellers. The code of conduct would also cover fundamental elements of online selling, such as substitution, which are not covered by the law.
