The article ‘The eye: organ of space and time’ was ground-breaking, and most informative. The degeneration of the superior chiasmatic nucleus in Alzheimer’s disease which causes sleep disturbances could possibly explain why these patients do not have a variation in mood throughout the day.

This information was also published in the Daily Mail health section on March 31, explaining that people are often a bit grumpy in the morning. This is absent in Alzheimer’s patients. Taking a simplistic view of the hugely complex dementia problem, I wonder if the circadian rhythm could be induced artificially by giving the drug Circadin containing the pineal hormone melatonin 2mg?
