It is a bit difficult to start to unpick the many angles in the latest Reader's Digest exposé of high street but there is one real eye-opener.
The report makes many accusations. Optometrists aren't up to the job. Only three out of 10 optometrists made a referral, those with modern kit couldn't use it effectively.
The NHS is underfunding optometry and the lack of a proper sight test fee means optometrists can't afford to perform the necessary tests. Optometry is too commercialised. Optometrists are bullied into pressure selling by their bosses and unnecessarily dispense spectacles.
It goes on to say that internet specs only cost £15, implying the whole profession is ripping off customers.
