Raising the visibility of optometry as the profession of choice to 16-year-olds is something most of us assume probably happens in school around years 10 and 11.
Like so many assumptions it is false. There is little or no careers advice in most schools and, more than ever, young people are left to their own devices to choose 'what they want to do'. Sadly it is the high profile and the sexy option that youngsters are attracted to, often without knowing what those choices entail.
Last week I had the pleasure of hosting a discussion (see News) on employment and skills in optics. It is no secret that parts of the country are shunned by optical professionals, but attendees were adamant something needed to be done. Like most in optics they care about the profession and were happy to discuss ideas that could help seed optometry in those difficult areas for the future.
