Seldom a week goes past that contact lens firms aren't busy educating practitioners at CET events or letting them know of advances in their product portfolio and marketing initiatives.
In addition, at the end of next week is the 2008 BCLA conference and exhibition in Birmingham, with a concentration of new product launches. Many of these seem to have been kept under wraps, but are sure to include silicone hydrogel and daily disposable lenses, and most likely a combination of the two.
There is certainly no lack of excitement among contact lens fitters as new and improved products reach the market, as evidenced by recent high attendance figures at CL events, but that excitement needs to be translated into increasing numbers of contact lens wearers. While it is promising to see from recent ACLM figures that demand for silicone hydrogels is continuing to rise - up 20 per cent in 2007 on the previous year - a much more rewarding figure would be a major overall rise in the beneficiaries of contact lens wear.
