Comment: Title fight is a preliminary bout

Regulation within optics has always been tied to the official titles of those who examine and dispense. While the professions have always been happy to work within the rules laid down by the General Optical Council and in The Opticians Act, accepted practice and technology have constantly tested the boundaries.

Regulation within optics has always been tied to the official titles of those who examine and dispense. While the professions have always been happy to work within the rules laid down by the General Optical Council and in The Opticians Act, accepted practice and technology have constantly tested the boundaries.

But as ABDO members vote to drop dispensing from their title (News) is it time to look again at how the profession is organised?

The diversity of opinion is only matched by the public's lack of understanding when it comes to optics. But how can the profession ever answer the question of what it needs to do to be taken seriously when it still wrestles with the question of who does what.
