Reluctant as I am to drive traffic to The Daily Mail website, which doesn't need my help, there was a sensationalist story about contact lenses DESTROYING (their capitals) eyesight with ONE (my caps) woman's cautionary tale.
Basically it boils down to a wearer who kept her lenses in 'for more than 14 hours every day' who was 'shocked' and 'horrified' that her eyes were in danger from neovascularisation which 'in rare cases can threaten sight'. It turns out she wasn't wearing silicone hydrogels and had 'always worn... lenses from 7am until nearly midnight'. That's some 17 hours a day. A contact lens wearer since the age of 14, the worry is that she had, seemingly, never been advised to reduce the hours of wear, let alone change to more modern lenses and that no one had picked up on the changes to the cornea previously.
