Moneo rightly highlights the limitations and frustrations of the GOS. We already have the solution, come and practice in Croydon!

The optometric triage led Croydon Community Ophthalmology service also allows for GP direct referral and self-referral for all but three very urgent scenarios. The patients Moneo describes could easily have been managed under the scheme.

Optometrists have more stimulating clinical practice and receive much improved fees. Patients are happy to be seen promptly and conveniently in the community, ophthalmologists are happy to see appropriately referred patients with reduced waiting times and the NHS saves money! Really a ‘win-win’ situation which should become a national model.
