Editor's comment: Time to stop topping up

A few weeks after Acanthamoeba was in the press and the parasite is back in the spotlight again as an ‘eye-devouring amobea’, courtesy of a Daily Mail warning to UK contact lens wearers (September 6).

This follows the high-profile case of an unfortunate monthly contact lens wearer who was blinded in one eye (News 24.08.12) after a swim in a hotel pool. The latest warning was sparked by a lecture last week at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen, which highlighted that

Acanthamoeba is all around us, while pointing out the recent incidence and its severity. Another aspect of the talk was that researchers in Scotland are working to develop solutions that are capable of killing Acanthamoeba without being toxic to the eye.
