Glaucoma patients in awkward position over yoga

Joe Ayling

Yoga and exercise might be on the new year's resolution list for many patients but, as reported this week, it presents a risk for glaucoma sufferers.

A latest study in New York reveals that head down positions in particular have been shown to elevate intraocular pressure. It means patients should be advised to avoid such stretches, together with heavy weights and push ups, the research found.

There is no excuse to reach for the Quality Streets tin just yet though, because yoga instructors should be able to recommend modified positions when the condition is known. As always, this is an important example of when communication between patient and practitioner cannot be compromised.
