Researchers have been busy in Hong Kong, looking into the benefits and pitfalls of orthokeratology, with a flurry of study results just published and the conclusion that another study is needed Ophthalmologists at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) found that 38 per cent of microbial keratitis cases between 2001 and 2010 among 18 and unders were directly related to orthokeratology.
They believe that increased susceptibility to bacterial infection at the point of corneal abrasions may result if proper compliance in the overnight wear of orthokeratology lenses is not followed. And here is the dichotomy - there is a major rise in myopia (with severe myopia increasing the risk of sight-threatening disease) among children and Hong Kong Polytechnic University researchers can point to a significant delay in myopia progression with orthokeratology.
