Sony has excited the technology world this week by revealing details of contact lenses capable of recording our every movement.
Their possible uses mirror those flouted for Google Glass a few years ago – think live sport, interactive learning, news reports.
However, the main difference here is the wearer has no extra ‘baggage’. Google Glass was often deemed a slightly cumbersome add-on for everyday spectacle wearers – but at least you knew who was wearing them.
In contrast, contact lenses with cameras would in theory require zero effort to use – recording at the blink of an eye, but this invisibility presents issues of its own and not least privacy. Indeed, the prospect of hidden cameras might hinder journalists – already carrying around a degree of suspicion – in particular.
