Jurgen Klopp brings in the crowds for optics

Joe Ayling

Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp helped push eyewear into the public spotlight this week after an exuberant goal celebration with his players ended with his spectacles being damaged.

A simple Google search for the term ‘Klopp’s glasses’ this afternoon resulted in 1,550,000 results as the narrative continues and the high profile German makes a name for himself in the UK.

The much-publicised incident at the weekend, after his team had scored in injury time to beat Norwich City 5-4, saw Klopp’s glasses knocked on the floor by striker Christian Benteke.

The charismatic coach then struggled to find his spare pair, telling camera crews that ‘It’s really difficult looking for glasses without glasses’.

By his next press conference Klopp had found the spares, but joked the new black frames made him look like ‘a serial killer’.

All this comes as welcome publicity for the optical market, which is all too often sidelined in mainstream and retail news coverage.

However, the question that remains is who supplied and fitted his eyewear. While his spectacles look similar to a Ray-Ban model, surely the readers of Optician can put this one to rest? Answers on a postcard please.
