Lens care is not so clear in Canada

Rory Brogan

We're back in Canada again - as in writing about it - as it seems the old problem of oxygen peroxide solutions being mistaken for multipurpose solutions continues, with very painful results for those involved (albeit very small numbers of consumers) http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ismp-canada-warns-potential-eye-190000136.html;_ylt=AwrBJSDZOj1TejIAomDQtDMD.

We covered this subject briefly last year when Helath Canada raised the issue http://www.opticianonline.net/opticianspace/blogs/the_contact_lens_blog/archive/2013/05/08/concern-in-canada.aspx and it seems that the recommendations given then (updated outer and inner labels warning of the risk) have failed to clear up the confusion faced by some contact lens-wearing consumers.

In fairness to the manufacturers the lens case with neutralising dial is very different to non-hydrogen peroxide containing MPS cases, but accidents do happen. The latest alert from ISMP Canada recommends storing MPS bottles away from hydrogen peroxide bottles at home and in the practice. If this latest in a line of warnings does not put an end to the problem, perhaps a whole rethink about the bottling is required. Maybe it's time for hydrogen peroxide-containing solutions to be sold in red plastic bottles?
