Letter: Getting back into practice

In a profession that is 53% female we need to be encouraging experienced practitioners back into the profession not discouraging them

I qualified as an optometrist in 1995 and practiced clinically for several years before hanging up my ophthalmoscope to concentrate on management roles.

As I was still working within the profession I kept my registration with the GOC and attended regular CET events. When I had my family I finally de-registered for a period of four years. On return from my maternity leave in 2014 I re-joined the GOC; a surprisingly simple task for someone who still received regular copies of the Optician and enjoyed completing the CET articles contained within them.

It was only this year that I decided I would like to practice clinically again and began the process of joining the ophthalmic provider’s list.
