I am sure that Mark Twain, who is often accredited with origination of the above corrupted quotation, would forgive me. I have never written to the Optician before, despite being tempted to do so many times. So, what has prompted me put digit to keyboard? The GOC report on CET and its ‘high uptake figures’.

The GOC Summer Bulletin 2007 states many statistics; 98 per cent of us met the required number of points; optometrists gained on average 52 points; 6,500 events were provided; contact lens points awarded were 200,000.

A useful pie chart depicted the vast number of points dedicated to optical examination and contact lens practice. Ocular disease education featured well, as did ‘communication skills’.
