Before writing this month's column I decided to re-read what I wrote at this time last year. At that stage, I exhorted optometrists to engage with their PCTs to really move optometry forward in the field of primary care and become true players in the NHS for the first time.

Before writing this month's column I decided to re-read what I wrote at this time last year. At that stage, I exhorted optometrists to engage with their PCTs to really move optometry forward in the field of primary care and become true players in the NHS for the first time.

It may seem that little has been achieved on a major scale, but under the surface I genuinely believe that there are major changes afoot. I have begun to see PCTs in my region of England realising that we are out there and that they can make use of our skills. This will offer us a great many opportunities if we engage with these people.
