FODO was told at its AGM, that the optical professions must continue to press their case at primary care trust level to raise their profile with GPs and commissioners to ensure that they promote the benefits of regular eye examinations. This message was delivered by Dr David Thome OBE, national clinical director for primary care. My cynical reaction to this is why if he believes in the development of new models of care in optometry has he not done something about it?

FODO was told at its AGM, that the optical professions must continue to press their case at primary care trust level to raise their profile with GPs and commissioners to ensure that they promote the benefits of regular eye examinations. This message was delivered by Dr David Thome OBE, national clinical director for primary care. My cynical reaction to this is why if he believes in the development of new models of care in optometry has he not done something about it?

Dr Thome also referred to special clinical interest and reference has been made elsewhere to the recently updated guidance on implementing care close to home. Apparently, the new guidance which is aimed at commissioners emphasises the role of professionals with special clinical interests. In this context, comments relate to GPs and pharmacists. While they and dentists have all agreed national frameworks for special interests, optometry has not.
