Pouring oil on troubled waters

Rory Brogan

It seems that the tale of contact lens woe that is Avaira has continued for manufacturer CooperVision, which has extended its already extended recall (see http://www.opticianonline.net/opticianspace/blogs/the_contact_lens_blog/archive/2011/10/13/do-you-recall.aspx) of Aviara Toric lenses to include Avaira Sphere. In its official statement the company explains that it has included 'a limited number of lots of Avaira Sphere contact lenses' because they did not meet its updated requirements due to the level of a silicone oil residue. The company then goes on to explain that the total number of Avaira Sphere lenses affected by this recall is 6.6M, of which 4.9M were shipped to customers globally. I've never been much of a mathematician, but I'm going to stick my neck out on this one and say that neither the figure 6.6M nor 4.9M are small in my book. I am hoping, for the sake of the company, that they can get a handle on this saga which has now been rumbling along since August. http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/Safety/RecallsCorrectionsRemovals/ListofRecalls/ucm275835.htm
