Here's an interesting idea - a hydrogel that self-heals http://www.futureoftech.msnbc.msn.com/technology/futureoftech/hydrogel-acts-velcro-molecular-level-321030# but before we get too excited the material only works in highly acidic environments such as our stomachs and may have a role in drug deliver. Researchers describe how they have created material that is 'like Velcro at the molecular level', describing how it can be used in containers to ship acidic materials, whereby a crack would seal within seconds of coming into contact with the acidic material. In relation to contact lenses, they suggest that fine tuning is needed for contact with a much more friendly pH. There has to be a question as to whether the industry would want self-repairing contact lenses and anyway, silicone hydrogel is the material of choice these days vis a vis oxygen transmission.
