The last time I penned something on fake contact lenses, it related to a smallish seizure (of contact lenses) in Singapore http://tinyurl.com/9z6nj2o which pales in comparison with the latest find in China http://english.eastday.com/e/120918/u1a6868658.html. The most recent case concerns a haul of 1.8 million fake contact lenses, again coloured lenses, in Shanghai. These are reputed to have a value of $10m, presumably on the street, as none of the samples sent for testing passed the quality test. In this case there is no mention of any brand name being passed off but there is a suggestion that the operation started out in 2008 before the bust this summer. That would suggests that there have been a very large number of fake contact lenses in circulation, presumably in the Far East. One wonders if there was also a rise in eye infections as a result. Another question that springs to mind is where were they being sold - on the internet or through high street stores? It seems that if this sort of operation is being duplicated elsewhere it could be a major problem.
