Simon Berry: Beyond buzzwords

Simon Berry asks whether the optical sector could be doing much more to support the environment

‘Sustainable optometry’ seems to be the phrase of the moment, and rightly so. We are living on a planet with limited resources and natural systems held in a balance that we only have a basic understanding of. We are only just starting to realise how vulnerable some of those systems are to human influence.

But can a sustainable optometry industry really save the world?

Most sensible people know that we all need to do our bit to become a little bit more sustainable. The even more sensible people out there know that we should try to understand the problems before we start shouting about the solutions. There are no quick and simple answers and sustainability is a very complex subject. We need to come up with a balanced approach and direct our efforts to where we can make the most impact.
