
Drivers’ vision is one of the most emotive issues in the optometric profession and over the years it has been hard not to let feelings towards drivers who have killed or injured pedestrians and road users, influence the way a story is written.
When news filtered through recently that a compulsory eye test for drivers over 70 with three-year renewals thereafter was one of the measures being considered by the government as part of its 2019 Road Safety Statement, the industry would have breathed a collective sigh of relief. But change is some way off and in today’s unpredictable political landscape, nothing is certain.
