On reflection, I am something of a hypocrite when it comes to the issue of drivers’ vision. I steadfastly believe there needs to be a visual acuity check or practical driving assessment incorporated into the licence renewal process for people over the age of 70 and tougher punishment for unfit drivers that cause injury or death.
But I cannot be so certain as to what my reaction might be if my right to drive was ever questioned at some point in the future, either by family or a medical professional.
I’d like to think I would accept it with good grace, but there’s just a nagging feeling that I’d be tempted to carry on driving. Anyway, it’s a question for 30-ish years’ time, one feels.
