Singapore's into silicone

Rory Brogan

I've got an eye on the Asian contact lens market today, thanks to some information recently supplied by GfK Asia, and a very positive read it is too. Covering Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan, the results for 2010 are 12 per cent up on the previous year. While dailies are the main CL purchase at 46 per cent, I am pleased to report that silicone hydrogels are the strongest segment for growth, with over 21 million pieces sold across this market. Out of the five countries, Singapore can report the greatest interest in SiH lenses at 28 per cent in 2010. SiH figures for Taiwan and South Korea are lower than the others as consumers are in the intial transition stage from conventional lenses. GfK confidently predicts double digit growth for contact lenses in 2011 and I dare say SiHs will take a tad more business again. Visit www.gfk.com
