Tapping into trouble

Rory Brogan

Here's a story on the dangers of sleeping in contact lenses that perhaps raises more questions than it gives answers http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2028226/Why-going-sleep-contact-lenses-blind-you.html?ITO=1490 It concerns a wearer who admitted to sleeping in her soft monthly disposables and occasionally washing them in tap water, who, not surprisingly ended up with microbial keratitis. One presumes that the lenses were not extended wear silicone hydrogels, and there is also a question as to who supplied them, as the unfortunate wearer comments: 'Had I been more aware of the risks I would have been more vigilant.' I 'm presuming that had she had regular check ups with her contact lens optician that he/she may have warned of the dangers in sleeping in lenses that were not designed for overnight wear and that washing them in tap water was an absolute no no. If there is one good thing it is that she didn't get Acanthamoeba, which is reported to be on the rise in the UK, partly as a result of the use of water storage tanks here. In spite of the many unanswered questions, the article has some good advice on handling and looking after contact lenses.
