The secret ingredient

Letters
Having read Alan Donnelly's letter (September 9) regarding his free sample bottle of a new multipurpose solution which provides no clinical information on which to decide if he should recommend it to his patients, I feel exactly the same regarding the '1-Day Acuvue Moist' lens product.

The manufacturer has run many full-page advertisements telling us about the comfort of the amazing new product, but fails to tell us what the 'moisture-rich ingredient' is. I am sure the manufacturer will argue that this is market sensitive information and is simply protecting its product from being copied or improved upon, but surely the practitioner needs to know what he is inserting into his patients' eyes.

If there was an adverse reaction and the patient wished to take action, would the practitioner be potentially liable or the manufacturer or both?
