The View from the High Street: Free eye tests do not equate to inadequate ocular examination

Over the past couple of months I have followed the industry reaction to the GOS fee increase and I am inclined to agree with many of the comments made. However, I am strongly opposed to the assertions made by the Association of Independent Opticians and Dispensing Opticians (AIO) that free and discounted eye tests should be abolished, as reported in Optician.

What really irked me was the assertion by the AIO that: ‘free or discounted sight tests had to be paid for in the form of an inadequate ocular examination.’ I re-read this claim over and over again in disbelief. The editor’s comment section of the same magazine, which described the AIO as the ‘new voice of reason’ appeared to give credence to its statement and failed to acknowledge any alternative views – something the AIO later joyously posted on its Facebook page. Where is the proof that free or discounted tests are paid for by inadequate ocular examinations? If there was any then I am sure that the GOC would be very interested in looking into these dangerous practitioners.
