Disunity, lack of leadership and political clout is a significant factor in the parlous state of UK optics.

The only way for optics to move forward is through patient education and that requires a co-ordinated approach and dedicated budget.

Currently, the average consumer doesn’t appreciate the merits of regular eye examinations, premium lenses and coatings, specialised contact lenses or the breadth of sports eyewear available.

Manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and the profession could mount a highly effective generic advertising and PR campaign, and with costs shared, would be a real proposition. Any individuals – not optical organisations – who would like to discuss this further are welcome to contact me.
