For many years it would have been easy to forecast that the optical landscape would change over the future years and that the change would not be to the benefit of the optical professions or practices. Going back more years than most can remember, we had the introduction of unregistered dispensing and ready-made reading glasses, then abolition of a universal NHS sight test, and more recently online retailing. All these issues were predicted to be the death of traditional optical practice, either independent or multiple. Add to that we have had talk of oversupply of optometrists, poor NHS fees and optical bodies that could not co-operate or work with each other.
